Rickshaw - A Heritage, Culture, Struggle and Symbol of Possibility in Bangladesh:

The rickshaw is so deeply woven into the urban life of Bangladesh that calling it merely a vehicle would be an understatement. It carries within it the stories of livelihood, art, urban history and the emotional fabric of its people. From the bustling streets of Dhaka to Chattogram, Rajshahi, Khulna or Sylhet—rickshaws represent a moving cultural identity across the country.

The word rickshaw originates from the Japanese term “jinrikisha,” meaning “human-powered vehicle,” though the word has long been absorbed into the Bangla language.

Historical Emergence:

Rickshaws first appeared in the Bengal region during the 1930s, introduced in Kolkata and Chattogram. Gradually, they found their way into Dhaka.

• In the 1940s, only a handful of rickshaws could be seen on the streets of Dhaka.
• By the 1950s, they became widely popular for being cheap, accessible, and suitable for densely populated cities.
• After the independence of Bangladesh, rickshaw-pulling became a primary occupation for large sections of the urban lower-income population.

Today, Dhaka is often referred to as the “City of Rickshaws.” Nowhere else in the world is the rickshaw used as extensively as it is in Bangladesh.

Rickshaw Art: A Global Folk Heritage:

Bangladeshi rickshaw is not only a mode of transport—it is a canvas of vibrant art. Internationally, rickshaw art is recognized as a form of folk art.

Its characteristics include bright colors—red, yellow, blue, green—along with floral patterns, birds, landscapes, scenes from rural Bengal, film stars, national monuments, freedom fighters, religious motifs, and moral messages.

Old Dhaka’s Lakshmi Bazar, Sutrapur, and Narinda once served as the heart of rickshaw decoration. Many artists still continue this tradition, keeping the heritage alive despite modern challenges.

A Life of Struggle Behind the Pedals:

Rickshaw-pulling is far from easy. From dawn till late night, rickshaw pullers face scorching sun, rain, storms and uncertainty of income. Most must pay a daily rental to the owner, leaving their earnings unstable.

Health risks such as chronic pain, asthma, fatigue, and exposure to accidents are constant concerns. Traffic congestion and unsafe roads add further pressure to both pullers and passengers.

Yet, millions of households across Bangladesh still rely entirely on rickshaw-pulling for survival.

A Pillar of Urban Mobility:

In Dhaka city, rickshaws account for nearly 40% of short-distance travel. In the absence of sufficient public transport, they remain the most reliable option for daily commuters.

Rickshaws are also environment-friendly—no smoke, no noise, easy movement through narrow lanes, and relatively low cost. However, challenges exist:

• They contribute to traffic congestion
• Safety concerns persist
• Lack of registration and regulatory systems remains unresolved

Even so, rickshaws continue to serve as a vital urban lifeline.

The rickshaw sector is a major segment of Bangladesh’s informal economy. It supports millions through:

• Garage and workshop operations
• Rickshaw manufacturing
• Repair work

Research suggests that 1 to 1.2 million people in Dhaka alone depend, directly or indirectly, on rickshaw-related income.

Modernization and Future Prospects:

While traditional rickshaws still dominate, modernization has begun:

• Battery-powered e-rickshaws and e-bikes
• Digital fare systems
• Safer rickshaw designs
• Rickshaw-art tourism

Globally, Bangladeshi rickshaws already hold a unique reputation. They have been showcased in international exhibitions, cultural events, research projects and documentaries—standing proudly as cultural ambassadors of Bangladesh.

ধরে নিন, পৃথিবীর সব মানুষই মেয়ে হয়েই জন্মায় — ছেলেরা হয়তো কেবল বিশেষ একটি আকস্মিক জৈবিক পরিবর্তনের ফল! অসম্ভব মনে হয় ?

অসম্ভব মনে হলেও, সত্যি এই যে, প্রতিটি মানব ভ্রূণ শুরুতে একটি নিরপেক্ষ বা নারীসদৃশ অবস্থায় তৈরি হয়। এবং ছেলে হবার জন্য আলাদা করে একটি জিন, একটি সংকেত আর এক বিপ্লব ঘটে শরীরের ভেতরে।

কিন্তু কেন এমন হয়? কেন প্রথমেই ছেলে নয়? কীভাবে শরীর জানে তাকে ছেলে না মেয়ে হতে হবে? এই সিদ্ধান্ত নেয় কে? 

এই লেখায় আমরা বিস্তারিত জানার চেষ্টা করব— Y ক্রোমোজোমের রহস্য, SRY জিনের প্রভাব, এবং কিভাবে গর্ভের নারী কাঠামো মুছে ফেলে ছেলেকে ছেলেই বানিয়ে তোলা হয়। 

মানব দেহে লিঙ্গ নির্ধারণ শুরু হয় জন্মের অনেক আগেই—ঠিক তখনই, যখন শুক্রাণু এবং ডিম্বাণু একত্রে মিলিত হয়ে একটি নতুন প্রাণের সূচনা করে। এই নিষেকের মুহূর্তেই নির্ধারিত হয় ভবিষ্যতের সন্তানের জেনেটিক লিঙ্গ: যদি দুটি X ক্রোমোসোম (XX) থাকে, তবে সেটি কন্যা; আর যদি একটি X এবং একটি Y ক্রোমোসোম (XY) থাকে, তবে সেটি পুত্রসন্তান হবে।

এই লিঙ্গ নির্ধারণের নিয়ন্ত্রণে থাকে Y ক্রোমোসোমে অবস্থিত একটি বিশেষ জিন—SRY (Sex-determining Region on Y chromosome)। এই জিনটির কাজ হলো ভ্রূণের প্রাথমিকভাবে নিরপেক্ষ বা যৌন-অসামান্য গোনাড (gonad) কে পুরুষ গোনাড অর্থাৎ অণ্ডকোষে পরিণত করতে প্রয়োজনীয় সংকেত দেওয়া। এটি সক্রিয় হয় ভ্রূণের গর্ভাবস্থার প্রায় ৬ষ্ঠ থেকে ৭ম সপ্তাহে। তখনই ভ্রূণের ভিতরে পুরুষাঙ্গ গঠনের প্রক্রিয়া শুরু হয়।

অনেকেই বলে থাকেন যে, প্রতিটি ভ্রূণ প্রথমে মেয়েই হয় এবং পরে Y ক্রোমোসোমের কার্যকারিতা শুরু হলে সেটি ছেলেতে রূপ নেয়। কিন্তু এই ধারণা বৈজ্ঞানিকভাবে ভুল এবং বিভ্রান্তিকর। বাস্তবে, ভ্রূণের গঠনের প্রাথমিক কয়েকটি সপ্তাহে তার গোনাড (যা থেকে পরবর্তীতে অণ্ডকোষ বা ডিম্বাশয় তৈরি হয়) থাকে বিপোটেনশিয়াল, অর্থাৎ ছেলে বা মেয়ে হওয়ার দুটি সম্ভাবনাই খোলা থাকে। তবে ভ্রূণের জিনগত কাঠামো যদি XY হয় এবং SRY জিনটি সঠিকভাবে কার্যকর হয়, তাহলে সেটি পুরুষ লিঙ্গের বিকাশের পথে এগিয়ে যায়।

এটি সত্য, যে প্রথম ৬ সপ্তাহ পর্যন্ত XX এবং XY উভয় ধরণের ভ্রূণের গঠন দেখতে প্রায় একই রকম থাকে। তবে এটিকে "মেয়ের মতো" বলা সঠিক নয়। এটি একটি যৌন নিরপেক্ষ বা অস্পষ্ট অবস্থা। এর মানে এই নয় যে ভ্রূণ মেয়ে ছিল এবং পরে ছেলে হয়ে গেল।

মানব ভ্রূণের বিকাশের শুরুতে দুই ধরণের প্রাথমিক প্রজনন নালীর অস্তিত্ব থাকে—একটি হলো Müllerian ducts (যা থেকে মেয়েদের প্রজনন অঙ্গ তৈরি হয়: যেমন, ফ্যালোপিয়ান টিউব, গর্ভাশয়, জরায়ুমুখ ইত্যাদি), আরেকটি হলো Wolffian ducts (যা থেকে ছেলেদের শুক্রনালীর অংশ যেমন epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicle তৈরি হয়)। এই উভয় নালী ৬ থেকে ৭ সপ্তাহ বয়সী প্রতিটি ভ্রূণে উপস্থিত থাকে। অর্থাৎ, ভ্রূণের ক্রোমোসোম XX বা XY যাই হোক না কেন, উভয় duct system শুরুতে থেকে যায়। এই অবস্থাকে বলে bipotential phase বা যৌন-নিরপেক্ষ বিকাশ পর্যায়।

তবে এরপর শুরু হয় ক্রোমোসোম-নির্ভর পরিবর্তনের ধারা।

যদি ভ্রূণটি XY হয় এবং Y ক্রোমোসোমের SRY জিন সক্রিয় থাকে, তবে সেটি SOX9 নামক একটি transcription factor সক্রিয় করে। SOX9-এর সক্রিয়তার ফলেই গঠিত হয় Sertoli কোষ, যেগুলি পুরুষ ভ্রূণের অণ্ডকোষ গঠনের মূল ভিত্তি। এই Sertoli কোষগুলি তৈরি করতে শুরু করে একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হরমোন—Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH)।

AMH-এর কাজ অত্যন্ত নির্দিষ্ট এবং গুরুত্বপূর্ণ: এটি মেয়েদের reproductive tract গঠনের উৎস Müllerian duct–কে দমন করে বা ধ্বংস করে দেয়।

এখন আসি, আসলে AMH কীভাবে Müllerian duct-কে বন্ধ করে?

AMH Sertoli কোষ থেকে নিঃসৃত হয়ে পার্শ্ববর্তী মেসেনকাইমাল কোষের উপরে কাজ করে। এই কোষগুলিতে থাকে AMHR2 (Anti-Müllerian Hormone Receptor Type 2)। এই রিসেপ্টরে AMH যুক্ত হলে, SMAD2/3 pathway সক্রিয় হয়, যা সেই কোষে অ্যাপোপটোসিস (apoptosis) বা কোষ মৃত্যুর সংকেত দেয়। এর ফলে ধাপে ধাপে ভ্রূণের Müllerian duct গঠন রোধ হয় এবং অবশেষে তা সম্পূর্ণ অবলুপ্ত হয়ে যায়। এই প্রক্রিয়াটি ৮ থেকে ১০ সপ্তাহের মধ্যে ঘটে থাকে এবং পুরুষ ভ্রূণে গর্ভাশয় বা ফ্যালোপিয়ান টিউবের কোনো অংশ গঠিত হয় না।

যদি এই প্রক্রিয়া ব্যর্থ হয়, যেমন: AMH না তৈরি হয় (যেমন Persistent Müllerian Duct Syndrome), অথবা AMHR2 রিসেপ্টর কাজ না করে, তবে XY ভ্রূণের শরীরে পুরুষ ও নারী উভয় duct-ই থেকে যেতে পারে। একে বলে intersex condition বা লিঙ্গ দ্বৈততা।

অন্যদিকে, XX ভ্রূণের ক্ষেত্রে যেহেতু SRY বা SOX9 সক্রিয় হয় না, তাই Sertoli কোষ এবং AMH তৈরি হয় না। ফলে Müllerian ducts স্বাভাবিকভাবেই বিকশিত হয়ে গর্ভাশয়, জরায়ু নালী, এবং জরায়ুমুখ তৈরি করে। সেইসাথে, Wolffian duct ধ্বংস হয়ে যায় কারণ সেখানে testosterone নামক হরমোন থাকে না যা তা ধরে রাখে।

এখন প্রশ্ন উঠতে পারে—তাহলে এই ভুল ধারণা কোথা থেকে এলো যে “সব ভ্রূণ মেয়ে হয়”? হয়তো এই বিভ্রান্তির মূল উৎস সেই ‘বাইরে থেকে দেখা’ বিষয়টি। কারণ গর্ভাবস্থার প্রথমদিকে ছেলে ও মেয়ের যৌনাঙ্গে চেহারাগত পার্থক্য থাকে না। কিন্তু বৈজ্ঞানিক দৃষ্টিতে, নিষেকের মুহূর্তেই যদি ভ্রূণে Y ক্রোমোসোম থাকে, তাহলে এটি পুরুষের দিকেই এগোবে—এবং তা কখনই মেয়ে ছিল না। এছাড়া, কিছু বিশেষ ক্ষেত্রে দেখা যায় যে XY ভ্রূণের মধ্যে SRY জিন থাকলেও তা কোনো কারণে সঠিকভাবে কাজ করছে না—যেমন, 46,XY Gonadal Dysgenesis রোগে আক্রান্ত ব্যক্তিরা দেখতে মেয়ে হলেও তাদের ক্রোমোসোম হলো XY। আবার কিছু XX ব্যক্তি (যাদের শরীরে SRY জিন অস্বাভাবিকভাবে উপস্থিত) পুরুষের মতো বিকশিত হতে পারেন—এটি XX male syndrome নামে পরিচিত। তবে এসব ঘটনা অত্যন্ত বিরল এবং সাধারণ নিয়ম নয়।

সম্প্রতি, একটি গবেষণায় দেখা গেছে যে ইঁদুরের ক্ষেত্রে যদি গর্ভাবস্থায় মা-ইঁদুরের শরীরে লৌহের ঘাটতি থাকে, তাহলে কিছু XY ভ্রূণের মধ্যে SRY ঠিকমতো কাজ না করে ফেলে এবং তারা মেয়ের মতো অঙ্গ গঠন করে ফেলে। যদিও এটি মাউস নিয়ে করা গবেষণা, এবং মানবদেহে এখনো এই রকম কোনো বৈজ্ঞানিক প্রমাণ নেই। তবুও এটি বোঝায় যে SRY-এর কার্যকারিতা পরিবেশগত কিছু বিষয়ের উপর নির্ভর করতে পারে—তবে এটি শুধুই গবেষণার স্তরে সীমাবদ্ধ।

At one point, she stood at a corner of the stage, took off her bra, and said _“I want to auction this.
How much would you pay?
The audience became frantic—everyone wanted to buy her bra. The bidding went all the way up to 3,000 dollars.
Then she burst out laughing & She said _ “You are terribly foolish people ".
You’re ready to spend 3000 dollars to buy my bra, even though you would never spend a single dollar to help a poor, starving person who needs a little food.
Knowing that I cannot even have a sexual relationship, you’re willing to pay for my bra?
Your mindset makes me deeply ashamed and saddened.
This is the reality of our society. When you are asked to donate for religious causes, you say you are poor.
When you are asked to donate for social welfare, you say times are hard.
But when there is a show or a concert, those very people line up in the front row.

🚲 ঢাকায় রিকশার প্রথম আগমন ও ইতিহাস

ঢাকার পথঘাট, যানজট কিংবা সংস্কৃতি—রিকশা ছাড়া যেন অসম্পূর্ণ! কিন্তু জানেন কি, ঢাকায় প্রথম রিকশা কবে এলো, কোথা থেকে এলো, আর একে প্রাচীন কালে কি নামে ডাকা হতো? চলুন জেনে নেওয়া যাক।

🔹 রিকশার আবিষ্কার

রিকশার উৎপত্তি হয়েছিল ১৮৬৯ সালে জাপানে। তখন এক জাপানি মানুষ ইজুমি ইয়োসুকে (Izumi Yosuke) একধরনের ছোট গাড়ি তৈরি করেছিলেন, যা মানুষ টেনে নিয়ে যেত। এ গাড়িকে বলা হতো রিকশা (শব্দটি এসেছে জাপানি ভাষার Jinrikisha থেকে—“Jin” মানে মানুষ, “Riki” মানে শক্তি আর “Sha” মানে গাড়ি)।

অর্থাৎ, রিকশার আদি অর্থ হলো—“মানুষের শক্তিচালিত গাড়ি।”

রিকশার উৎপত্তি নিয়ে কয়েকটি ভিন্ন ভিন্ন কাহিনি প্রচলিত আছে। তার মধ্যে একটি জনপ্রিয় গল্প হলো—একজন অসুস্থ স্ত্রীকে হাসপাতালে নিয়ে যাওয়ার প্রয়োজনে রিকশার আবিষ্কার। তবে ইতিহাসে এটি পুরোপুরি সত্যি হিসেবে স্বীকৃত নয়, বরং লোককথা বা কিংবদন্তির মতো বেশি প্রচলিত। আমি আপনাকে বিস্তারিত বলছি:

রিকশার উৎপত্তি

রিকশার জন্মস্থান: রিকশার আবিষ্কার হয়েছিল ১৮৬০–৭০ এর দশকে জাপানের টোকিওতে।

প্রথম নির্মাতা: ইতিহাসে তিনজন আবিষ্কারকের নাম পাওয়া যায়— ইজুমি ইয়োসুকে, তাকায়ামা কসুজো এবং সুজুকি তোড়াজো। তারা ১৮৬৯ সালের দিকে রিকশার প্রথম নকশা তৈরি করেন।

রিকশা (Rickshaw) শব্দটি এসেছে জাপানি শব্দ “Jin-riki-sha” (人力車) থেকে, যার মানে হলো মানুষের শক্তিচালিত গাড়ি।

স্ত্রীকে হাসপাতালে নেয়ার গল্প

কিছু বই ও জনপ্রিয় লেখায় বলা হয়, তাকায়ামা কসুজো নামের একজন মিশনারি বা ব্যবসায়ী তার অসুস্থ স্ত্রীকে হাসপাতালে নেওয়ার জন্য এই বাহন তৈরি করেছিলেন। ঘোড়ার গাড়ি ছিল দামি, আর হাঁটিয়ে নেওয়া কঠিন—তাই তিনি কাঠ ও লোহার তৈরি হালকা দুই-চাকার গাড়ি বানান, যেটা একজন মানুষ টেনে নিতে পারে।

এই গল্পটা অনেক বই ও প্রবন্ধে পাওয়া যায়, কিন্তু জাপানি সরকারি আর্কাইভে এর সরাসরি প্রমাণ নেই। বরং তিনজন আবিষ্কারকের যৌথ উদ্যোগেই রিকশার প্রথম ব্যবহার শুরু হয়েছিল। তাই স্ত্রীকে বাঁচাতে রিকশার আবিষ্কার—এটা সুন্দর একটি কিংবদন্তি, কিন্তু নিশ্চিত ঐতিহাসিক সত্য নয়।

দ্রুত জনপ্রিয়তা

১৮৭০-এর দশকে জাপান জুড়ে হাজার হাজার রিকশা ছড়িয়ে পড়ে।

এরপর চীন, ভারত, বার্মা (মায়ানমার) হয়ে ২০শ শতকের শুরুতে ঢাকা সহ উপমহাদেশে আসে।

🔹 রিকশার আগমন উপমহাদেশে

জাপান থেকে এই পরিবহনটি প্রথমে চীন, তারপর সিঙ্গাপুর, মালয়েশিয়া ও কলকাতায় পৌঁছায়। কলকাতায় রিকশা আসে উনিশ শতকের শেষভাগে (১৮৮০–১৮৯০ সালের দিকে)।

🔹 ঢাকায় প্রথম রিকশা

ঢাকায় প্রথম রিকশা আসে ১৯৩৮ সালে।

সে সময় কলকাতায় চাকর করা কিছু ধনী পরিবারের লোকেরা রিকশা দেখে মুগ্ধ হন এবং ঢাকায় নিয়ে আসেন। ঢাকায় প্রথমে মাত্র তিনটি রিকশা চলে।

🔹 কার হাত ধরে এলো রিকশা?

ঐতিহাসিক সূত্রে জানা যায়, ঢাকার নবাব পরিবারের এক আত্মীয় কলকাতা থেকে রিকশা নিয়ে আসেন। ধীরে ধীরে এটি জনপ্রিয় হতে থাকে।

প্রথম দিকে রিকশা ছিল শুধু অভিজাত পরিবার ও ধনীদের যাতায়াতের বাহন। পরে ক্রমে এটি সাধারণ মানুষের পরিবহন হয়ে ওঠে।

সংক্ষেপে—সবচেয়ে স্বীকৃত তথ্য বলছে: ১৯৩৮ সালে নরায়ণগঞ্জ ও নেত্রকোনায় থাকা ইউরোপীয় জুট–ব্যবসায়ীদের হাত ধরে কলকাতা থেকে সাইকেল রিকশা আসে; সেখান থেকেই ঢাকায় রিকশার সূচনা। 

আরও কিছু বর্ণনা আছে—

কেউ কেউ বলেন সূত্ৰাপুরের এক বাঙালি জমিদার ও ওয়ারীর এক মারোয়ারি ব্যবসায়ী ১৯৩৮ সালে ছয়টি রিকশা আনেন ও চালু করেন। 

একজন গবেষকের মতে র‍্যালি ব্রাদার্স জুট কোম্পানির এক ক্লার্ক ১৯৪০ সালে নরায়ণগঞ্জে একটি রিকশা আনেন; প্রথম মালিক ছিলেন জদু গোপাল দত্ত, প্রথম চালক নরেশ—এই গল্পটাও প্রচলিত। 

তাই “কার হাত ধরে” প্রশ্নের সবচেয়ে নির্ভরযোগ্য উত্তর হলো: ইউরোপীয় জুট রপ্তানিকারকদের মাধ্যমে—যদিও লোকশ্রুতিতে উপরকার মতো কয়েকটি বিকল্প বিবরণও পাওয়া যায়।

বাংলাদেশের প্রথম রিকশা কোথায় এলো ও কখন?

১. চট্টগ্রাম — ১৯১৯ সালে

হাতে টানা রিকশা (hand-pulled) প্রথম ১৯১৯ সালে চট্টগ্রামে প্রবেশ করে, এবং এটি ছিল মিয়ানমার (তৎকালীন রেঙ্গুন) থেকে আনা।

ঢাকায় প্রথম রিকশা লাইসেন্স কখন দেওয়া হয়?

প্রথম রিকশা লাইসেন্স ঢাকায় প্রদান করা হয় ১৯৪৪ সালে। এ তথ্য বিশ্বকোষ ও ইতিহাসগত উৎস থেকে পাওয়া যায় ।

এই লাইসেন্সিং প্রক্রিয়া চালু করার পর থেকেই ঢাকায় রিকশা চলাচল—বা অফিসিয়ালি চালু থাকা—আইনগতভাবে স্বীকৃত হতো।

রাষ্ট্রীয় লাইসেন্স বন্ধ করা হয় ১৯৮৬/৮৭ সালে। ঢাকায় ১৯৮৬ সাল পর্যন্ত মোট ৭৯,৫৫৪টি রিকশা লাইসেন্স দেওয়া হয়েছিল ।

পরে এই লাইসেন্স প্রদান কার্যক্রম সীমিত বা বন্ধ হয়ে যায়, যার ফলে অনেক রিকশা আজও অফিসিয়াল বা অনিয়মিত লাইসেন্স ব্যবহার করে চলছে ।

🔹 আজকের রিকশা

ঢাকায় এখন প্রায় ১০ থেকে ১২ লাখ রিকশা আছে বলে ধারণা করা হয় (যদিও লাইসেন্সপ্রাপ্ত সংখ্যা অনেক কম)। রঙিন, অলঙ্কৃত, বর্ণিল এই রিকশা এখন শুধু পরিবহন নয়—বরং ঢাকার সংস্কৃতির অংশ।
